The sample treatment plans with behavioral goals and objectives make this book a priceless resource for therapists who must develop and document appropriate treatment protocols and strategies for clients served by managed-care organizations. In the Introduction, Babior and Goldman state:
We wrote this manual and our self-help book, Overcoming Panic, Anxiety, & Phobias, to provide therapists and their clients with information about and practical tools for treating panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, specific phobias, social phobia, and general anxiety disorder. The strategies described in this book are also useful for people experiencing high stress levels. Too often, people are treated by professionals who are not familiar with the most current treatment regimens for these disorders. Fortunately, cognitive-behavior therapy, upon which our manual is based, has been tested by researchers worldwide and found to be effective for treating people with anxiety disorders.
The authors have included assessment tools, relaxation scripts, and cognitive strategies to challenge overestimates of threats and catastrophic thinking, and exposure techniques to help people face their fears. They also provide support for lifestyle changes, information for family and friends, and skills for relapse prevention.
Sessions in this manual are directly related to the chapters in the self-help book Overcoming Panic, Anxiety, & Phobias, so material presented during therapy sessions can be reinforced by clients' reading and at-home practice. Reproducible worksheets from Working with Groups to Overcome Panic, Anxiety, and Phobias also provide between-session support for your treatment goals.
